History

Original Winery Location

Established in 1987, Soquel Vineyards was founded by Peter & Paul Bargetto and Jon Morgan. While working in the industry, they chose to create their own brand after finding very little wineries in the area specialized in wines from the great Santa Cruz Mountain appellation.

Beginning in a small winery on Glen Haven Road, the partners leaped into success with beautifully crafted Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay wines. They quickly gained local popularity, as well as the eyes of many critics, even landing a spot in the Pebble Beach “Series One”Commemorative Wine Selection as the 3rd Hole Wine for the 1989 Santa Cruz Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, Partners’ Reserve.

Construction of our Winery

In 1998, the partners purchased a 5-acre property only a few hundred yards up the road from the original winery location. It is at this spot that our winery is settled today. Construction began on the winery in 2001. The roof is fashioned with handmade Italian tiles from the 1700s, Jon Morgan created stunning cellar doors from old 12,000-gallon redwood tank salvaged from the original Bargetto winery, and the driveway is lined with Italian cypress that were planted by Peter, his son Simone and father-in-law Michele Chissotti. Our Estate vineyard is 3-acres of the property and planted solely to Pinot Noir. The winery overlooks the sweeping hills of Soquel and a direct view of the Monterey Bay on a clear day.

Today, Soquel Vineyards is recognized as a one of the prestigious wineries of Santa Cruz Mountains. Peter, Paul, & Jon still manage the day-to-day operations and are continually committed to producing only the best wines.
