Sensuous wines for Valentine’s weekend

With Valentine’s Day coming up this weekend, a voluptuous velvety wine to share with your sweetie is bound to be on your agenda. This special day should be celebrated by lovers everywhere—think hearts, flowers, and, of course, red vino. You don’t want to be drinking some flabby wine without any backbone—better by far to splurge on a sexy elixir that will make your sweetheart swoon.

Soquel Vineyards, Intreccio

The Intreccio, Italian for “weave,” is an absolutely gorgeous blend of 20 percent each of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. Awash with aromas of tobacco, cedar and blueberry, and full-on berry fruits to tantalize the tongue, the well-crafted Intreccio is a lush mouthful of rich red wine.

Soquel Vineyards

If Soquel Vineyards partners Peter and Paul Bargetto and Jon Morgan were walking down the street wearing their winning wine competition medals, you’d hear them coming from a mile away. This year was particularly rewarding for the Bargettos and Morgan—they won two Double Gold Medals and five Gold Medals at January’s San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

Small winery, and it takes a bit of an effort to get there, but worth it. Excellent wine, great people, great setting and view. MORE…

Striking Gold

A taste of Soquel Vineyards’ five gold medal-winning Pinots

The trio of winemakers at Soquel Vineyards has been winning awards for a while now. But nothing like what happened a few weeks ago at the recent San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Winemakers Jon Morgan, and brothers Peter and Paul Bargetto, who specialize in Pinot Noir made from the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation, made five Pinots in 2013—and all five won gold medals. Two of these outstanding examples of SCM terroir won double gold. So, when I was offered the chance to taste all the gold medal winners, I jumped in my car!  MORE
